What is Surface Casing Setting?
Surface casing setting is a crucial step in drilling operations—both for water wells and oil & gas wells—where a steel pipe (called surface casing) is installed and cemented into the upper portion of the borehole to provide stability, protection, and isolation for the well.
What Is Surface Casing?
Surface casing is the first and largest-diameter pipe inserted into a wellbore. It typically extends from the ground surface to a predetermined depth and is cemented in place.
Installation Steps
- Drill the Borehole
- Drill to the designated setting depth (often based on geological logs and regulatory requirements).
- Insert the Surface Casing
- A large-diameter steel casing pipe is lowered into the borehole.
- Cementing the Casing
- Cement is pumped down the casing and forced up the annular space between the casing and borehole wall.
- This seals the casing and prevents fluid migration around it.
- Cure and Pressure Test (Optional)
- Allow the cement to set. In oil & gas, the casing may be pressure tested before proceeding with deeper drilling.
